Earth 788 Jane Foster

Who is Earth 788 Jane, you ask? She’s the same Jane Foster we know and love from 616- with a little extra kick. That’s right, in Earth 788, from the Marvel What If? Comics, Jane Foster is a loveable nurse-turned-Norse after she finds the magical hammer Mjolnir in Issue #10- What if Jane Foster Found the Hammer of Thor? She has an absolutely wild adventure in this oneshot story. Here’s what goes down-

  • It begins mostly the same as canon Journey into Mystery, but Jane accompanies Dr. Donald Blake on his trip to Norway this time.
  • When attacked by the Stone Men from Saturn, Jane falls down into the ravine to retrieve Don’s cane.
  • It is here that she finds the mystical Mjolnir, disguised as a stick, and after beating it against a rock, she transforms into the goddess who she names Thordis.
  • She saves Don… a whole bunch.  And a lot of other people- She fights Loki, the Kronans, Radioactive Man, Mr. Hyde, and Mangog, among others.  She wastes no time getting busy.
  • Thordis eventually teams up with the Avengers, and Janet van Dyne is thrilled to see another woman in the ranks- not so thrilled that the men seem to go gaga over her, though.
  • Odin gets seriously confused when he summons the hammer and Jane along with it- This isn’t my son, he realizes.  [How perceptive of you, Odin…]  Sif’s also a little sad about it.  Jane gets booted off the rainbow bridge back to earth.
  • Things go south when Mangog attacks Asgard, attempting to begin Ragnarok.  Jane has to help save the day, which she totally does.
  • Still, Odin wants his true son back, so he asks her nicely to give up the hammer.  She does so, and the true Thor takes his form again.
  • That’s not where her story ends, though- apparently Frigga/Freyja doesn’t exist in this reality, and Odin is a lonely bachelor.  So impressed by Jane’s wits and power, he offers her godhood and an Asgardian wedding [similar to the canon Mighty Thor issue ‘To Become an Immortal’].
  • But wait- Sif and Thor are already arranged to be married… Then who does Jane get?  That’s right- Odin.  He makes her a goddess and then takes her as a bride.  She gets a cool dress and Asgardian status, though, so it’s probably not all bad.

This comic issue runs various prices in collections, but it’s generally about $15 in good condition.  There are tons of funny moments with Fandral, Loki, and the whole other host of characters that appear as Jane tears through the skies saving countless lives.  If you’re interested in reading it, I highly recommend it.

So now you know what happens when Jane has the hammer of Thor- pretty great, right?  Happy Janeboree, everyone!!!
